Margery "Marge" J. Dehning, 75, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, March 7, 2014, at her home in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 11th, at 11:00 AM at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen, MN, with Pastor Keith Selberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Margery Jean Dehning was born January 29, 1939, in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Clarence Theodore and Helen Charlotte (Amondson) Flage. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, and graduated from Waukon High School. She met Donald Dehning at Matter's Ballroom in Decorah, IA, and the two later married on March 20, 1960, at Zion United Church of Christ. The couple made their home on their Dorchester, IA, farm until moving into Waukon in 1990. Marge was the secretary for the Allamakee County Relief Office for 16 years, and was the director for two years. She also helped Don with the farm work: tending to the chickens, mowing, and gardening. Marge later worked for the Allamakee County Veterans Affairs Office for 18 years, retiring in 2004.
Marge was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen, MN, and was very active in Ladies Aid; she also served as the secretary for three years. Before getting married, she had been a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Marge was a very festive lady, always decorating for every holiday and sending out holiday cards. She enjoyed music and dancing and watching TV (especially when Elvis Presley was on). She loved all animals, especially cats, and collected many animal figurines and knick-knacks. Mostly, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and spoiling the dogs.
Marge is survived by Don, her husband of nearly 54 years, of Waukon; her two children: Vicki (Brett) Froslee of Andover, MN, and Jeff Dehning of Holmen, WI; five grandchildren: Cristian, Mya, and Neleh Dehning, and Alex and Jack Froslee; sister Marilyn Winter of Waukon; two brothers-in-law: Lloyd Dehning of Waukon and Merlin (Lois) Dehning of Caledonia, MN; and five sisters-in-law: Lila (Hillery) Kasten of Eitzen, Lorraine Peter of Caledonia, Janice (Gene) Tessmer of Caledonia, Letha Fall of Bussey, IA, and Carol Plank of Lake City, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Honorary casketbearers are her grandchildren: Mya and Neleh Dehning, and Alex and Jack Froslee. Casketbearers are Cristian Dehning, Dean Dehning, Richard Kasten, Cody Meyer, Tom Peter, and David Tessmer.
