Marcella M. McCabe, 85, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, October 27, 2013, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 31st, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Jim Dubert, Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg, and Msgr. Joseph Slepicka officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 2:45 PM scripture service and a 4:45 PM VFW Auxiliary memorial service.
Marcella Marie McCabe was born on July 17, 1928, in the Wexford area of rural Lansing, IA. Her parents were Henry and Mary (Donahue) Wagner. She attended Wexford Elementary School and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Lansing in 1946. On October 21, 1947, she married LeRoy Anton McCabe at Wexford Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Marcella and LeRoy farmed and raised their family on the south edge of Waukon. Marcella was a busy mother and homemaker, caring for her six children in addition to raising a garden, canning her produce, sewing, cooking, and baking for the family. As the children grew older she spent more time helping LeRoy on the farm both with the animals and in the field.
Marcella was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary, and the Waukon Golf and Country Club. As a young girl she was the organist at Wexford Immaculate Conception Church and played basketball when in high school. She enjoyed sports and liked to play golf, scoring four hole-in-ones, as well as following the Iowa Hawkeyes. Marcella also enjoyed playing bridge, tatting, and traveling and loved to entertain their many friends.
Survivors include her husband LeRoy of Waukon; five children: son William "Bill" (Janice) McCabe of Houston, TX and children Patrick (Mary) McCabe and sons Liam and Drew, Christopher (Beth) McCabe, Eryck Kratville, and Jeniffer (John) May; daughter Jean (Dr. Pearse) Derrig of La Crosse, WI and children Hally (Justin) Neubauer and children Jase Tofte and Jayven Neubauer and Marcy (Eric) Sgambati; daughter Joann (Chris Hirayama) McCabe of Hilo, HI; daughter Jule McCabe of Decorah, IA and daughter Erin (Mario Garzon) McCormick; and son Daniel (Renee) McCabe, Ph.D. of Augusta, GA and children Sean and Anna McCabe; a daughter-in-law Nancy McCabe of Denver, CO and daughter Tonya Richardson; and a brother Francis Wagner of Elkader, IA.
Marcella is preceded in death by her parents; a son Lyle; son-in-law Dale McCormick; daughter-in-law Mary McCabe; grandson Kyle McCormick; sister Rosemary Wagner; brother Mark and wife Mary Wagner; and sister-in-law Alberta Wagner.
