Lyle B. Shafer, 56, of Postville, IA, died Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 19th, at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville with Pastor Grant VanderVelden officiating. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 pm Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Memorials may be given in lieu of flowers.
Lyle Bruce Shafer was born September 20, 1956, in Waukon, IA, to Ralph Lloyd and Betty Ann (Folsom) Shafer. He grew up on the family farm in rural Postville, IA, and graduated from Postville High School in 1975. Lyle was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, where he continued to be a member. In high school, he worked at the Hygrade meat packing plant in Postville and later farmed with his dad. Lyle currently owned his own business, Lyle's Dairy Grooming, and he also kept busy with other farming jobs.
He had a great love of animals, especially dairy cows. Football and NASCAR were his favorite sports, and was a big Hawkeye and Packers fan. Recently, Lyle had enjoyed going fishing. Lyle also liked to play cards and could be found playing euchre at City Club multiple times a week.
Lyle is survived by his two brothers: Dennis (Barbara) of Winona, MN, and Dale (Deb) of Monona, IA; his sister Brenda (Butch Rommann) Shafer of Decorah, IA; two aunts: Patsy Kerndt and Jean Berge, both of Waukon; one uncle: Butch Folsom of Cresco, IA; and two nieces: Stacey Shafer of Des Moines, IA, and Tiffany (Brian) Aronson of Waterloo, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Casketbearers are Beanzy Schellhammer, Brad Kerndt, Dani Bahr, Lynn Folsom, Mick Eberhart, and Steve Walsky.
