Lyla V. Smith, 84, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 20th, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, rural Dorchester, IA. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Lyla Vivian Smith was born August 25, 1925 in Spring Grove, MN, the daughter of Alphy and Benora (Harstad) Solberg. She attended elementary school in Spring Grove, MN. On November 20, 1943 she married Kenneth William Smith at St. Paul's United Methodist Parsonage in Waukon, IA. Lyla kept very busy with raising her children and their activities. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and WELCA. Lyla enjoyed writing especially letters, listening to country music and working with flowers. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and taking care of young children. Lyla had a great sense of humor and her favorite color was purple.
Survivors include her children, Karen (Lawrence) Donahue of New Albin, Susan (Roger) Freese of Waukon, Rick (Theresa) of Waukon, Linda Sires of New Albin, Dennis (Cindy), Patricia Gilman, Randy (Pam), Frederick (Geralyn) and Gregory (friend Kristie) all of Waukon, and Peggy (James) Wilson of Leesburg, FL; 27 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Margaret (Orville) Flaten of Rockland, WI, Judy Ashbacher of Lansing; 5 brothers, Stanley (Carol) Solberg of St. Peter, MN, Paul (Carolyn) Solberg of Decorah, Rev. Robert (Judy) Solberg of Des Moines, IA, David (Eileen) Solberg of Hiawatha, IA and Donald Solberg of Hokah, MN; 2 sisters-in-law, Patricia Solberg of La Crescent, MN and Velma Mack of New Albin, IA; an aunt, Mildred Meyer of Spring Grove, MN and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth who died in 1995; a son, Ronald; an infant son and infant daughter; a great-grandson, Justin Cahoon; 2 brothers, Charles and Alden Solberg; and 2 sisters, Noami Solberg and Helen Fink.
Honorary casketbearers are her grandchildren. Casketbearers are Andy Sires, Cameron, Steven, Ryan and Heath Smith, Troy, Travis and Chris Neirling.
