Luella Anna (Schulte) Bakewell, 98, of Waukon, IA, died at Northgate Care Center in Waukon on Friday, October 5, 2012. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Father Donald Bakewell and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, October 8 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 4:00 PM scripture service, and for one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
Luella Anna (Schulte) Bakewell was born on August 22, 1914, in Dorchester, IA, to Bernard "Ben" and Mary Elizabeth (Roerkohl) Schulte. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester. Luella attended the "Dutch Hill" rural elementary school near Dorchester and graduated from Loretto Catholic High School in Caledonia, MN on June 3, 1931.
On May 17, 1938, Luella married Joe Bakewell at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester. They lived and farmed near Dorchester for several years until 1943 when they purchased a farm three miles north of Waukon where they raised their family.
In addition to being a homemaker, Luella was employed at the Good Samaritan Home, putting in 20 years of service. She was a long time member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon and was very devoted to her faith, saying the rosary daily. Luella loved her home and farm, and was so proud of how well it was maintained. She also enjoyed her card club, embroidering, and watching baseball and basketball on television. She was known for her excellent cooking and baking.
Luella is survived by one daughter: Jeanette (William) Howes of Brownsville, MN; three sons: Ralph (Kathy) Of Onalaska, WI, Kenneth (Bonnie) of Hokah, MN, and James (Joyce) of Ossian, IA; a daughter-in-law Colleen of La Crosse, WI; fourteen grandchildren: Sheila (Vince) Howes-Trammel, David (Anita) Howes, Colleen (Dan) Howes-Julie, Dan Howes, Debbie Bakewell, Diane (Steve) Weilandt, Kathy (Eric) Rogich, Vicky (Alan) Sanwick, Lori (Andy) Pankrantz, Jill (Jeffrey) Miller, Ann (Jonathan) Lockhart, Paul (Danielle) Bakewell, and Lee and Ian Bakewell; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister: Marcella Alberti of Milwaukee, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Joe, who died on February 28, 1986; three sons: Lawrence "Larry" on April 8, 1957, Ronald on February 9, 1986, and Robert "Bob" on July 30, 2011; one grandson: Steve Bakewell on May 15, 1988; one brother: Theodore Schulte; and five sisters: Veronica Bakewell, Mary Hammel, Leona Doviak, Anna Klemz, and Lucille Thompson.
Honorary casketbearers will be Luella's grandchildren. Casketbearers will be Norbert and Duane Bakewell, Chuck and Leo Schulte, and Joe and Gary Hammel.
