Lucille Elizabeth Halverson was born October 7, 1922, in rural Lansing, IA, the daughter of Herman Henry and Clara Elizabeth (Marti) Kerndt. She was baptized and confirmed at the Congregational Church in Churchtown, IA. She was affectionately called "Sis," a name family and friends still use today. Lucille attended Lycurgus Country School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1940. She then moved to Minneapolis, MN where she lived briefly before moving back to Waukon where she worked for Interstate Power for five years. On February 26, 1949, she married Robert John "Jack" Halverson at the Congregational Church parsonage in Decorah, IA. When her children were younger, she stayed at home to raise them. Once her children entered school, Lucille started working at the City Clerk's office in Waukon, an endeavor she greatly enjoyed for 25 years before retiring.
She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where she was active in ladies circles and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary. Lucille enjoyed sewing, playing cards, and having coffee with her high school classmates and friends. She loved spending time with her immediate and extended family, being especially fond of family gatherings. Her devotion to family led to a special interest in and inquiries into her extended families genealogy. She enjoyed traveling to visit her wanderlust family who lived in various locations across the US. While all travel was enjoyable, she was particularly fond of sharing the experience in New Orleans where a stray bullet landed at her feet during a New Year's celebration.
Survivors include her children: Katherine (Stephen) Halverson-Carpenter of Golden, CO, Thomas (Judith) Halverson of New Orleans, LA, Larry (Gwyn Beattie) Halverson of Ames, IA, and their children Hans and Karin; and Lisa Halverson of Evanston, IL; four sisters-in-law: Patsy Kerndt of Lansing, IA, Louisette Stromsodt of La Quinta, CA, Rosemary Kerndt of Omaha, NE and Lou Kerndt of Minneapolis MN; and a brother-in-law Les Wiemerslage of Decorah, IA. Many nieces and nephews whom she was very fond of survive Lucille. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert "Jack" who died in 1994; a sister Dorothy Wiemerslage; three brothers: Warren, Harold, and Donald Kerndt; a sister-in-law Sharon Kerndt; and a brother-in-law Lyle Stromsodt.
Casketbearers are John, Bill, Dick, Brad, and Clark Kerndt, and Bob and Ben Wiemerslage.
