Lorraine Louise Moericke, age 89, of Glendive, Montana formerly of New Albin, Iowa passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin with Father John Moser officiating.  Rite of Committal with military honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in New Albin. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service Saturday, March 1st at the church, with a scripture service at 9:00 A.M. A visitation will also be held from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Saturday, February 22nd at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive, Montana. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive and Martin Funeral Home of Waukon, Iowa have been entrusted with the arrangements.


Lorraine was born on March 8, 1924 at the family home place in New Albin, a daughter of Louis and Lena (Kuntz) Hammel.  She was raised and educated in New Albin and graduated from New Albin High School with the class of 1942.  Following her high school education, Lorraine worked for a peach canning factory in Illinois until enlisting with the United States Navy.  While in the Navy Lorraine was a teletype operator in Washing ton D.C. and a munitions inspector for four years when she received her honorable discharge from military service in 1946.

Lorraine decided to move to California after her military service.  Lorraine and Howard Moericke were married on October 9, 1948 in North Hollywood, California and to this union three children were born.  She was a devoted wife and mother and had moved across the country following her husband's military career.  After his retirement, they moved to a small farm in Westby, Montana and later Lorraine moved again to Williston, North Dakota.   Lorraine worked several different jobs before starting work at K-Mart where she remained until she retired in 1994.  In 2011, Lorraine wanted to be closer to her family, so she moved to Glendive and lived in the Heritage Assisted Living until 2012 when she moved to the Eastern Montana Veterans Home.

Lorraine thoroughly enjoyed gardening and she always had produce from her garden to give to her family and friends.  She was also a wonderful seamstress, and she loved taking care of her grandkids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Eugene Hammel and Frank Hammel; two sisters, Stacia Kavon and Mary Lou Blackmore; and one grandson, Benjamin Bromberg.

Lorraine is survived by her three children, Kimberly (Ron) D'Angelo of Emigrant, Montana, Ronald (Ruth) Moericke of Vergas, Minnesota and Kathleen (Loren) Voss of Circle, Montana; nine grandkids; eleven great-grandkids; one sister Rose Zoll of New Albin; one brother, Leo Hammel of Wichita Falls, Texas and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
