Lorraine Evelyn Johnson-Hefel

Lorraine E. (Berg) Johnson-Hefel, 79, of Earlville, IA, passed away Friday, May 08, 2009 after a short hospitalization in Dyersville, IA. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, May 12th at 11:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Buena Vista, IA. Inurnment at the church cemetery and lunch at the church will follow the services. Friends may call at the parish hall from 10:00 am until time of service on Tuesday. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers.
Lorraine E. Johnson-Hefel was born in rural Luana, IA on October 27, 1929, the daughter of John and Thelma (Decker) Berg. She attended the Little Red School and Waukon High School. Lorraine was married to Marland C. Johnson on March 24, 1944. They farmed outside of Luana for many years. They had seven children together. Lorraine was also married to Vince Hefel of North Buena Vista, IA, her husband and companion of many years. While in her forties, Lorraine took RN training through Northeast Iowa Community College at the Calmar and Peosta, IA, campuses. She excelled in her studies and went on to work as an RN for Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and Finley and Mercy Hospitals in Dubuque, IA. In 1984 she moved to Mesa, AZ and worked as an RN for the State of Arizona, retiring in 1993.
Lorraine loved to travel all over the United States. John Wayne was a favorite as well as musician Danny O'Donnell. She also enjoyed reading, playing euchre, going to the casino, dancing, and garage sales. She collected antique plates and dishes and enjoyed them immensely. She was loved and will be missed.
Survivors include her children, Bonnie (Johnson) Lewis of Earlville, IA, Eugene M. Johnson and Michael D. (Linda) Johnson, both of Dubuque, IA, John L. (Linda) Johnson of Lakeville, MN, and Russell L. (Sheila) Johnson of Paradise Valley, AZ; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Marlin (Dorothy) Berg of Cedar Rapids, IA and Donald Berg of Aransas Pass, TX; and a sister, Gayle (Charles) Larkin of Waukon, IA. She is preceded in death by her parents; 2 children, Linda L. Johnson and Kimberly C. Johnson; Marland Johnson; Vince Hefel; a brother, Rodney Berg; and a sister, Norma Johnson.
The family would like to give special thanks to Home Instead Senior Care for all their help, Heartland Hospice for the peace they provided, the staff of Mercy Hospital and Pharmacy of Dyersville for all their kindness, and Dr. Whelan and staff for all their encouragement.
