Lorna Jean Kruger Ashbacher, 88, of Waukon, IA, died Thursday, August 22, 2013, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 26th, at 10:30 AM at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Sue Klimstra officiating. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Salem United Church of Christ or the Women's VFW Auxiliary.
Lorna Jean Kruger Ashbacher was born June 2, 1925, on the family farm in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Albert and Ida (Becker) Winke. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ in Waukon. Lorna attended Ludlow #2 country school and graduated from Waukon High School. On April 24, 1946, she married Alfred Conrad Kruger at Salem United Church of Christ. The couple farmed together in the Ludlow township area. Lorna was a devoted farmwife and homemaker. Later on, Lorna was very proud of being a school bus driver and having one of the hardest routes. In 1986, she retired and moved into Waukon. On April 14, 1989, Lorna married Harold John Ashbacher at Salem United Church of Christ.
She was a lifelong member of Salem United Church of Christ, where she was actively involved in the Women's Guild. She was a member of the Women's VFW Auxiliary since 1968. She loved nature and was interested in conservation. She and Harold also liked to travel. Mostly, Lorna loved her family and spending time with them meant everything to her. One of her many interests was music; she passed this passion on to her family.
Lorna is survived by five children: Sheryl (Roger) Peterson of Waukon, Marcia (Gary) Gustafson of Slater, IA, Janine (Glen) DuCharme of McGregor, IA, Freddy (Lori) Kruger of Santa Maria, CA, and Randy (Teri) Kruger of Waukon; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marjorie Held and Marilyn (Ronald) Jahnke, both of Waukon; numerous step-family members; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Ida Winke; husband Alfred in 1988; husband Harold in 1998; brother-in-law Clifford Held; and nephew Lyle Jahnke.
Honorary casketbearers are Lorna's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers are Brooks Kruger, Brady Kruger, Andrew Kruger, Derek DuCharme, Shellie Coleman, Nicole Sickels, Laura Iseli, and Wendy Torson.
