Lois Wilhelmine (Meier) Hinrichs was born September 26, 1913 in Ludlow Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frederick Wilhelm and Maria Elizabeth (Wacker) Meier. Lois attended Ludlow #1 country school in rural Waukon, but her high school education was interrupted when she stopped to take care of her aging parents. She was also a caregiver to her future mother-in-law, Anna Marie (Wild) Hinrichs, as well as other family members and friends. Lois completed high school through correspondence courses and continued her education with an art correspondence course out of Minneapolis, MN. She worked as a secretary for the Sheridan Law Firm in Waukon. On May 4, 1973 she married Merrill George Hinrichs at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Merrill served in the United States Navy for thirty years. Following their marriage they farmed south of Waukon until moving to their newly built house in Waukon in 1975.
Lois was a very active member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. She enjoyed cooking, canning, and gardening. She was interested in history and genealogy and was an avid reader, especially of the Bible and and classical mythology. Lois' creative side was a big part of her life as she continued to paint, make birthday and Christmas cards, and sculpt biblical figurines. She also sewed much of her own clothing and made and collected dolls and hats. A caregiver much of her life, Lois took an active role in helping to foster young people and had a special love for animals.
Lois was an only child and had no children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Merrill, who died June 29, 1976; her paternal grandparents, Heinrich Friedrich Conrad and Conradina (Siekmeier) Meier-Böke; and her maternal grandparents, Charles Frederick August and Louise Sophia Wilhemina (Wille) Wacker.
