Lloyd Olson, 87, of Harpers Ferry, IA, died Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 6th, at 2:00 PM at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, IA, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Friends may call from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM Monday at the church.
Lloyd Alf Olson was born on May 24, 1924 on the family farm in Lafayette Township to Henry and Ida (Melbostad) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church of which he was a lifelong and third generation member. He attended Prairie Country School and the Waterville High School.
On September 7, 1952 he married Ruby Uren at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lansing. Lloyd owned and operated Olson Brothers sawmill with his brother Helmer. He did logging, hauling, sawing, sold railroad ties and lumber and helped his father with farming. He was active in his church; both he and Ruby were the church custodians and maintained the church cemetery for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Olson of Harpers Ferry; his children, David (Veronica) Olson of Waukon, and Deborah (Cliff) McElroy of Manchester, OH; 4 grandchildren, Steven Hill, Chad Olson, Janet Olson and Mandy (Steven) Hammel; 5 great grandchildren, RyLee and Marquis Olson, Cloee, Madison and Trey Hammel; and a sister, Amy Ferris of Burlington, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; and 3 brothers, Orville, Alton and Helmer.
