Lester Van Wey, 90, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Services will be held Saturday, February 9th at 2:00 pm at Frankville Presbyterian church in Frankville, IA, with Pastor Lynne Hanna officiating. Burial will be in Frankville Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Lester Morris Van Wey was born February 20, 1917 on his parent's farm near Frankville, the son of Claude and Lucille (Crabtree) Van Wey. He was baptized and confirmed at Frankville Presbyterian Church. He attended Frankville "Stone School" and graduated from Postville High School in 1934. On March 25, 1935 he married Vivian Laverne Letchford in Decorah, IA. Lester and Vivian farmed first near Frankville and later in Ludlow Township where they had a dairy herd and raised hogs, chickens and crops. When they were first married, they also helped to raise Lester's brothers and sisters who lived with them. They have been living in Waukon since 1997. Vivian died in 2002.
Lester was a life-long member of Frankville Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He also served as the sexton for the Frankville Cemetery for many years and was a member of the Farm Bureau. Lester took several welding courses at NICC in Calmar and became a very good welder and repaired machinery. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, roller skating, dancing, riding motorcycle and playing cards, especially 500. His favorite times were spent with his family and grandchildren. He and Vivian looked forward to regular visits from their local grandchildren and summer stays from those farther away.
Survivors include his children, Charles (Shari) Van Wey of Albert Lea, MN and a daughter, Jean (David) Schwinefus of Postville, IA; 5 grandchildren Scott (Jennifer) and Brian Van Wey, Debbie (Scott) Warth, Tharin Schwinefus and Tammy (Eric) Walsh; 5 great-grandchildren, Lars and Lexie Warth and Landon and Kellan Walsh and Catherine Van Wey; 2 sisters-in-law, Irma Van Wey of Waukon and Virgean Sanderson of El Paso, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vivian; 2 sisters, Lila Gilbert and Catherine Cannon and a brother, John Van Wey.
Casketbearers were his grandchildren and their spouses.
