Lester Earl "Bill" Thomson was born March 30, 1915 near Elon, IA on the rural Waterville farm of his parents, William James and Roxie E. (Olson) Thomson. He attended Elon rural school, started at Waterville High School, and graduated from Waukon High School. On November 21, 1942 he married Ann Laurayne Guider at the Baptist Parsonage in Waukon, IA. They farmed together in Center and Paint Creek Townships, operating a dairy herd and raising grain. Bill started on the home place, added a farm near Waterville in 1949, and rented other ground for crops. He and Ann moved to Waukon in 1966.
Bill was active at First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He was also the first leader of the Waterville Happy Hustlers 4-H Club, a past member of the Waterville School Board, a past president of the Waukon Kiwanis Club, sang in the Little Switzerland of Iowa Barbershoppers, and was a member at the Waukon Golf and Country Club.
Bill enjoyed people and he and Ann became very close friends with their neighborhood card club as well as a group they traveled together with to attend Iowa Hawkeye games. While his kids were young, Bill was an avid follower of all their activities. He maintained a life-long interest in all things farming by going to sales and auctions and in recent years enjoyed tending to all sorts of things at the Elon farm.
