Lester Vernon Fish was born on July 15, 1915 on the rural Waukon farm of his parents, Jesse and Mary (Huff) Fish. He grew up in the Rossville area and attended Jefferson #7 rural school. Following his schooling, Lester hired out to area farmers and also worked at Grove's Feed Mill in Monona. On December 24, 1936 he married Laura Ruth Decker in Waukon. Lester and Laura went into farming on their own, operating a dairy herd and raising beef cattle, hogs, chickens and grain. For many years he also did custom silo filling. Lester loved the farm life and in spite of moving to Waukon, remained very involved on a daily basis at the farm. To what most certainly would have been his liking, he spent much of what turned out to be his final day combining corn.
In his younger days, Lester enjoyed riding motorcycle and dancing at Rainbow Gardens. He enjoyed playing cards and having coffee with his family and friends. Lester liked people and was known by many for his positive attitude and optimistic outlook on life.
Survivors include his 4 sons, Wayne (Sandra), Cletus (Norma) and Verle (Jenny) Fish, all of Waukon and Dayton (Joan) Fish of Luana; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sylvia Marti of Marion, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Laura, who died in 1998; and a brother, Fred.
Casketbearers are his grandchildren, Bryan, Steven, Jesse, Michelle, Candi, Dirk, Jason, Verle II, and Kayla Fish, Lisa Brimeyer, Darcy Radloff, Dawn Stuart, Deb Palmer, and Wanda Brown.
