Leonard Lee Hanson was born on June 11, 1964 in Cumberland, WI, the son of Gordon and Betty (Voight) Hanson. He grew up in northwest Wisconsin, attending schools in Cumberland and Turtle Lake. Following a short time in the US Navy, he moved to Barron, WI, where on May 16, 1987 he married Lynn Kroll. They lived in Alabama for a time where Leonard trained as a plumber and electrician. In 1991 they moved back to Wisconsin and since 1996 they have lived in northeast Iowa where Leonard most recently worked for Art's Way Scientific in Monona.

Leonard always liked staying active. Rock climbing, hiking, and working in the yard kept him busy outdoors. He maintained a shop at his house where he did woodworking and home improvement projects. He was also an avid reader.
