Leona Amanda Duvel, 101, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, January 17, 2014, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 21st at 11:00 AM at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon with Pastor Sue Klimstra officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM Monday, January 20th at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Leona A. Duvel was born June 11, 1912, on her parent's farm in rural Postville, IA, the daughter of Henry and Augusta (Klepper) Snitker. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon. Leona attended Ludlow #9 country school and Frankville Junior High. On February 16, 1933, she married Edwin Lawrence Duvel at Salem United Church of Christ in a double wedding ceremony with her twin brother Leo. Leona and Edwin farmed together in Union Prairie Township rural Waukon, IA. Edwin died in 1963 and shortly after that she moved into Waukon. She took care of the sick, elderly and also did babysitting.
She was a lifetime member of Salem United Church of Christ, where she was involved in its women's fellowship. Her faith and church were very important to her. Leona enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens, playing cards, following Iowa Hawkeye basketball, baking, collecting bells, word finds and reading, especially poetry. She also enjoyed visiting with and making new friends. Her favorite time was when she was spending it with her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Janice Winter, of Waukon, IA; a granddaughter, Gwen (Mike) Lloyd, of Harpers Ferry, IA and a grandson, Greg (Wandu Peterson) Winter, of Waukon, IA; 8 great-grandchildren: Dan (Lacy) Lloyd, Jeremy (Ruth) Lloyd, Elizabeth Lloyd, Trish (Brady) Iverson, Shawn Lloyd, Heather (Chad) Jones, Nick (Amanda Roderick) Winter and Ashley (Tim Ryan) Winter; 12 great-great-grandchildren: Cashton, Caidee, Cael, Bailey and Riley Lloyd, Stella Iverson, Kody Lier, Tyler and Trent Jones, Alexa Meyer, and Wayde and Harper Winter and many nieces and nephews. Leona was also anxiously awaiting the arrival of her 13th great-great grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edwin, a son-in-law Cletus Winter, a grandson Wade Winter, 3 sisters: Gertrude Snitker, Anna Hesse and Mabel Winke, 3 brothers: Arthur, Daniel and her twin brother Leo Snitker.
