Leon J. Schulte, 80, of Waukon, IA, died Thursday, November 1, 2012, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 5th, at 2:30 PM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Sunday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon where there will be a 3:00 pm scripture service. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Leon John Schulte was born September 18, 1932, in Spring Grove, MN, the son of Joseph and Rose (Duffy) Schulte. He attended rural Waukon country schools. He and his family lived in Dorchester, IA, before moving to a farm west of Waukon in 1937. On August 6, 1955 he married Shirley Ryan at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, West Ridge in rural Waukon. They farmed for many years; Leon also did some custom corn picking for area farmers and worked at the Waukon Ready Mix Company. He retired in 2000.
Leon was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus council 1570 and served on the Waukon Equity Co-op board of directors. He enjoyed collecting farm toys and loved playing and sharing them with his grandchildren. Leon also enjoyed antiquing, boating, spending time with family, friends and meeting and visiting with many wonderful people through his hobbies.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Waukon; his children, Debbie (Larry) Wright of Tripoli, IA, Loran (Dianne) of Concord, NC, Kurt (Karen) of Olathe, KS, Sheila (Jim) Schmidt-Cook of Marion, IA, Bryan (Cyndi) of Waukon, and Sharon Schulte of Waukon; 12 grandchildren, Chris (Carrie Chollar) Cook, Crystal Schmidt, Laura (Brian) Mason, Jenny Cook, Rachelle Schmidt, Michael Schulte, Justin Schulte, Zachary Wright, Alison Schulte, Luke (Taylor Schlake) Schulte, Marissah Schulte and Bryce Schulte; 3 brothers-in-law, Wayne Hammel of Cedar Rapids, IA, Glen McClain of Waterloo, IA, and James Ryan of Cedar Rapids, IA; 4 sisters-in-law, Mary Jane (Don) McGraw of Waukon, Theresa (Richard) Beall of Cedar Rapids, IA, Angie (Dale) Schulte of Waukon and Ruth (Harold) Schulte of Cedar Rapids, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Allan Schulte; an infant granddaughter, Amanda Schmidt; 3 brothers, Harold, Donald and Dale Schulte: 8 sisters, Aileen Hammel, Adele Howe, Lorraine Monserud, Rita May, Blanche McClain, Madonna Blocker, Joan Troendle and Karen Hammel.
Honorary casketbearers are Leon's grandsons. Casketbearers are Greg Fahey, Tim Kelly, Dan Lyons, Brian Mason, Jeff May and Lou Swenson.
