Lawrence L. Powell, 101, of Luana, IA, died Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at home in the very same room he was born in. Private graveside services will be held in Smithfield Cemetery in rural Luana. Lawrence Leroy Powell was born August 27, 1923, at his parents' home in rural Luana, IA, the son of William and Mabel (Carney) Powell. After attending school, he worked at John Deere in Dubuque, IA, for a short time and also helped his aunt Lessie and uncle Kurt at their picture framing store in Chicago. He was a farm boy at heart so after moving home, Lawrence soon met the love of his life Patricia Bowen on a blind date. They were married on May 30, 1954, in Monona, IA. After purchasing the Powell family farm, he spent many years with Pat by his side milking cows, raising pigs, and putting in crops.

Lawrence was a member of Garden City United Methodist Church in Monona. He loved working with wood, making many shelves, cabinets, picture frames, and much more for his family and friends. Lawrence made a point to go on a vacation for many years, traveling to all 50 states and abroad with the Heritage Club. His biggest joy was spending time with his wife, his daughters and grandchildren. Lawrence attended many of his grandkids' activities and so loved when everyone got together for the holidays.

Survivors include his daughters: Lori (Reggie Rissman) Thies and Lisa (Joel) Quandahl; five grandchildren: Amy (Greg) Byrnes, Alec and Lane Quandahl, Jeremy (Heather) Rissman, and Josh (Stacy) Rissman; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Elaine (Robert) Von Bon. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pat in 2024, and a granddaughter Meghan Thies.
