LaVon Jean Monroe Steffenson was born on July 19, 1924 in the Lycurgus area of rural Waukon, IA. She was the daughter of Glen Byron and Catherine (Ward) Monroe. LaVon was baptized at St. Mary's Lycurgus and confirmed at St. Pius Cherry Mound Catholic Churches. She attended various rural schools, Waterville School and high school in Ames, IA. On November 18, 1942 she married Melvin Carlton Steffenson at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon. They started out by farming for 3 years near Lansing before moving to a farm 2 miles east of Waukon where they lived for 53 years. LaVon enjoyed the farm where she helped with the milking, raised a garden and tended to her many flowers and yard. She enjoyed hosting many family gatherings at their home. She also worked for several years at Northern Engraving in Waukon and in the housekeeping department at the Good Samaritan Center for 25 years. They retired from the farm and moved to Waukon in 1998.

LaVon spent a good deal of time as an active community volunteer. She gave her time to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Waukon Sr. meal site, visiting at the Good Samaritan Center, and being an adopted grandparent and reader at the local school. LaVon was admired by all who knew her for the countless hours of devotion and dedicated care she gave to her son Lyle during his long battle with MS. She continued to volunteer as a caregiver with the Northeast Iowa MS Group. Since retirement she has enjoyed playing cards, bus trips, dining out with family and friends and reading and has continued to raise flowers. She will be remembered as a good neighbor and friend, often the first to arrive when someone needed help.
