LaVon L. Brickman, 88, of Waukon, IA, formerly of Harpers Ferry and Evansdale, IA, died Monday, November 23, 2015, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 30th, at 10:00 AM at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, IA, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo, IA, at approximately 2:30 PM Monday. Friends may call from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and for 1 hour before the service at the church on Monday.
LaVon Linda Brickman was born on February 17, 1927 in Waverly, IA. She was the daughter of Elmer and Erna (Kleinschmidt) Lindner. LaVon grew up in Nashua, IA, where she was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church and attended local schools. She worked at Rath Packing Plant in Waterloo, IA, where she met Harry Lee Brickman. The two were married on May 28, 1950, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fairbank, IA, and made their home in Evansdale, IA, for many years. In December of 1984 LaVon retired after 38 years on the line at Rath. They moved to Harpers Ferry, IA in 1992 where they enjoyed many years before moving to Waukon, IA, in June of 2015.
LaVon has been a member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and its Pricilla Circle in rural Waterville, IA, since moving to Harpers Ferry and was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Evansdale, IA, when living there. She was also a member of the Harpers Ferry Golden Agers Club. LaVon enjoyed the outdoors and liked to go fishing as well as work in her vegetable and flower gardens. She liked getting together with friends to play cards and was an excellent cook and baker, well known for her dinner rolls. LaVon and Harry traveled extensively and for many years spent some of the winter in Phoenix, Arizona.
Survivors include her husband Harry Brickman of Waukon; a son David (Cyndi) Brickman of Harpers Ferry, IA; a son-in-law Chuck Rice of Raymond, IA; 6 grandchildren: Pam (Jason) Dugan, Michelle Rice, Carrie (Ryan) Etten, Jeremy (Erica) Harn, Katie Harn, and Chad Brickman; 9 great-grandchildren: Brenden, Zach, Charlie, Caidence, Jack, Haley, Maddox, Mason, and Alex; 2 brothers: Merlwin (Violet) Lindner of Nashua, IA and Duane (Jeannie) Lindner of California; and a sister: Arlene (Gerald) Hoover of Colorado. She is preceded in death by her parents; 2 daughters: Diana Rice and Debra Ann Brickman; and 2 sisters: Bernice (Lawrence) Hartzel and Ella Mae (James) Depenbusch.
