LaVerne J. Geno, 83, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 18th at 10:30 am at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon with Pastor Grant VanderVelden officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
LaVerne Joseph Geno was born on April 24, 1929 in rural Monona, IA. His parents were Joseph W. and Mary Louisa (McShane) Geno. He attended the Little Red School between Forest Mills and Volney. Following his schooling he worked some on the farm and also helped electricians with the rural electrification project when electricity was brought to the rural areas. From 1952 to 1956 he served as an Electrician's Mate 2nd Class in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He served on the USS Manchester in the Korean Theater. While he was in the service, he married Anna Mae Schlitter on August 9, 1952 in San Francisco, CA. Following his discharge, LaVerne and Anna Mae returned to Allamakee County where they farmed in Franklin Township, southwest of Rossville. They operated a dairy herd and raised hogs, chickens, sheep, beef cattle and grain. After retiring from farming but while still living in the country, he drove a van for Northeast Iowa Transit for several years; a job he really enjoyed. LaVerne and Anna Mae moved to Waukon in 2004.
LaVerne was a very social person and liked being around and visiting with people as much as possible. He was currently the president of Waukon Sr. Citizens and was a member of the VFW. He loved music all of his life and liked to go dancing; being a member of several square dancing clubs and taking numerous trips to Branson, MO to see the musical shows. LaVerne also liked to get together with friends to play cards and loved to spend time outdoors fishing, hunting, and looking for mushrooms.
Survivors include his 4 children, Larry (Laura) of Lindstrom, MN, Joe (Deb) of Rochester, MN, Gene of Freeport, IA, and LuAnn (Dennis Barth) Geno of Decorah, IA; 9 grandchildren, Marty (Wendi) Geno, Nicole (Chris) Kalkbrenner, Angela (Tom) Geno-Stumme, Joshua (Carrie) Geno, Micah Geno, Zach Geno, Dana (Paul) Gordon, Dacia (Corey) Warrington, and Jessica Geno; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Anna Mae, who died in 2010; 2 sisters, Ruth Schutte and Jessie Lund; and a brother, Leonard.
His grandchildren will serve as casketbearers.
