Laurayne A. Easley, 89, of Harpers Ferry, IA, died Monday, June 27, 2011, at Great River Care Center in McGregor, IA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 2nd, at 10:00 AM at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there was a 5:00 pm American Legion Auxiliary service.
Laurayne Agnes Easley was born on January 21, 1922 in rural Harpers Ferry, IA, the daughter of Thomas and Crystal (Reed) O'Brien. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Paint Rock. Laurayne attended rural elementary country schools and graduated from Waukon High School in the normal training program in 1939 and graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1966. On August 10, 1942 she married Donald Easley in Concordia, KS. Laurayne taught at Bakers School, Waukon Junction and Mound City country schools all in the rural Harpers Ferry area. She also taught at West Elementary School in Waukon before retiring in 1988.
She was a member of St. Ann's and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Association, NEA, a life time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 722 of Harpers Ferry and served as a board member for the Harpers Ferry Library. Laurayne enjoyed traveling, hunting ginseng, dancing and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Easley of Harpers Ferry, IA; 3 sons, Tom (Marjen) Easley of Payson, AZ, Don Easley of Des Moines, IA and John (Maryann) Easley of St. Paul, MN; her dog, Geronimo; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lois Robinson of Lansing, IA and Theresa Quinlan of Dubuque, IA. She is preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Darrel Easley; 4 sisters, Mary O'Brien, Betty Boardman, Joyce Farley and Doris Johnson.
Casketbearers are Ray and Leon Manning, Carl, Dave and Jeff Johnson, Dean Penkalski and Donald Gavin.
