Laura M. Duvel, 88, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, September 10, 2010, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 14th, at 11:00 AM at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Laura Mae Duvel was born October 14, 1921 in rural Monona, IA, the daughter of Edward and Selma (Bruehahn) Hamann. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona and attended rural country schools in Allamakee County and Monona High School. On November 6, 1939 she married Raymond E. Gress at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona. Raymond died November 24, 1944. On November 17, 1948 she married Lloyd Duvel at Zion United Church of Christ Parsonage in Waukon, IA. They farmed together in Ludlow Township rural Postville, IA, where they raised dairy cows, beef cows, hogs, chickens and crops for many years. Lloyd died September 22, 1993. Laura remained on the farm before moving to South Crest in Waukon in 2006.
Laura was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, where she was active in its ladies groups. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, playing cards and taking rides in the country. Laura also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Ardith (Donald) Waters of Waukon, Dean (Carol) Gress of McGregor, IA, Ed (Susie) Gress of Postville, IA, Gary (Dorothy) Gress of Waukon, and Jim (Joann) Duvel of Postville, IA; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Raymond and Lloyd; a grandson, Monte Gress; a sister, Florence Schroeder and a brother, Milton Hamann.
Honorary casketbearers are Lori Cahoon, Vicki Gress, Patty Payton, Bonnie Pits, Nancy Smith, Jackie Waters, Laura Wright and Jeff Waters. Casketbearers are Bryan Waters, Tim, Troy, Ray and Michael Gress, Tom Topel, Larry and Jerry Schroeder.
