Larry D. Smith, 68, of Dorchester, IA, died Monday, March 9, 2015, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 14th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, IA, with Fr. Jim Dubert and Deacon Mike Ward officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 3:45 pm scripture service.
Larry David Smith was born August 28, 1946, in Waukon, IA, the son of Milburn and Vivian (Reinhardt) Smith. He attended Forest Mills Country Schools in the rural Postville area and Postville High School. After high school he worked for some local farmers. Larry served in the US Navy from 1965 - 1966 before he was medically discharged. On October 1, 1966 he married Carol Marie Colsch at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester, IA. Larry worked at Northern Engraving in Waukon and Spring Grove, MN, he also worked at a sawmill in Waukon and Spring Grove. Larry did some logging with his brother Elmer in Wyoming for a short time. After he retired he farmed and raised a small herd of beef cows. "When Larry was younger he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping". He loved going to auctions with Carol and spending time in the outdoors, especially taking walks in his woods.
Survivors include his children: Mary (Lynn) Thomas of Preston, MN, Melissa (Ryan La Rose) Driscoll of Houston, MN, and Brian (Michelle) Connor of La Crosse, WI; nine grandchildren: Julia Smith, Jamie, Joshua, Jacob, and Jaclyn Thomas, Clarissa Driscoll, Samantha Smith-Hatter, and Tyler and Arwen Johnson; three step-grandchildren: Ellen, Brad, and Greg Johnson; a great-grandchild Rebecca Witt; his mother Vivian Wintrick of Rochester, MN; two sisters: Evelyn (Jerry) Posthumus of Rochester, MN, and Marcia Pavek of Jacksonville, FL; and a brother Donald (Cynthia) Wintrick of Tampa, FL. He is preceded in death by his father; his wife Carol who died in 2013; a son Edward; and two brothers: Elmer Smith, and James Wintrick.
Honorary casketbearers are Larry's Grandchildren. Casketbearers are Milburn, Aaron, Eric, and Emery Smith, Jamie Thomas, and Josh Thomas.
