LaGertha E. Sherman, 83, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, December 7, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 13th, at 2:00 PM at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, IA, with Pastor Marie Paterik officiating. Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 - 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
LaGertha Eleanor Sherman was born June 9, 1925 on the Center Township farm rural Waukon, IA, of her parents Eilert and Irene (Barthell) Bakkum. She was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon. She attended rural country school, Waterville School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1942. On June 11, 1944 she married Paul H. Sherman at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. LaGertha and Paul farmed in Ludlow Township for several years, where she raised and sold raspberries. LaGertha also worked as a cook for the Allamakee School District for 24 years before retiring in 2003.
LaGertha was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where she was very active in the ladies groups. LaGertha also served as a Sunday school supervisor and teacher. She was also a member of the Ludlow neighbors club. LaGertha enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, gardening and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Janice Olsen of Laguna Hills, CA, Susan Sherman of Greenfield, WI, Donald (Donelle) Sherman of Waukon, Bonnie (Bill) Papke of Onalaska, WI, Randy (Cheryl) Sherman of Marshfield, WI and Mark (JoAnn) Sherman of Waukon; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson and a sister, Marjorie Moe of Decorah, IA. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul who died in 1995; 2 brothers, LaVerne and Barthell Bakkum.
Honorary casketbearers are Paul, Matthew, Aaron, Alison and Bailey Sherman. Casketbearers are Jason and Zachary Olsen, Robert, William and Rebecca Papke and Marie Sherman.
