Kenneth N. Marti, 87, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, December 2, 2013, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 4th, at 11:00 AM at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Kenneth Norvil Marti was born on September 1, 1926 on the rural Waukon, IA, farm of his parents, Philip and Inga (Sorum) Marti. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ, where he remained a life-long member, and attended Jefferson #7 rural school. Following school he traveled and worked his way through many of the western states on a trip with his brother Herman; taking odd jobs as they came along. He returned to Iowa and worked at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids for a short time before coming back to Allamakee County and starting farming. In 1948 he married Joyce Russell. They were later divorced. On September 12, 1970 he married Penny Kellison at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. In 1969 Kenny started doing carpentry work. He began with industrial projects through the carpenters union in Waterloo, IA, working for major retailers and even helping to put the roof on the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, IA. He later did residential carpentry closer to home. His last working years were spent helping his brother Gordon on the home farm.
Kenny loved working on the farm and was very handy with repairing the equipment and keeping all the machinery running. He liked fixing things around the house and had a soft spot for feeding the birds and squirrels. He enjoyed reading about frontier history, stories about the old west, old time country music, and attending family gatherings.
Survivors include his wife Penny of Waukon; 4 children: Rose (Don) Manning of Lansing, IA, Susan (Jim) O'Neill and Cindy (Reggie) Curtin, both of Waukon, and Danny (Pauline) Marti of La Crosse, WI; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: Gordon of Luana, IA and Grant of Dubuque, IA; and a sister-in-law Sylvia Marti of Marion, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son David; a grandson Brandon; 7 brothers: Herman, Alton, Victor, Marvin, Lester, Wilbur, and an infant brother; and a sister Alice Marti.
Casketbearers are his grandchildren: Zeb, Shay, and Austin Curtin, Juston and John Marti, Teresa Yeoman, Shannon Marti, Laurie Keith, Lisa Snitker, Lacy Lloyd, Jane Hansen, and DeKote'-Kenzie Curtin.
