Kenneth (Jim) James Carter

July 31, 1935 — January 21, 2010

Kenneth (Jim) J. Carter, 74, of Harpers Ferry, IA, died Thursday, January 21, 2010, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 25th, at 11:00 AM at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, with Rev. Richard Iles officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Mays Prairie Cemetery in rural Lansing, IA. Friends may call from 3:00 - 6:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.


Kenneth James Carter was born on July 31, 1935 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of Leonard and Ruth (Sherman) Carter. He attended elementary school in the Mechanicsville, IA, area and graduated from Mechanicsville High School in 1953 where he was a pitcher for the baseball team. On January 6, 1956 he married Betty Heidemann at the Methodist Church in Mechanicsville. They lived in Cedar Rapids where he worked at Wilson's Meat Packing Plant as a meat inspector for several years. Kenneth then went to work for the USDA Veterinarian Services before retiring in 1995. Kenneth and Betty moved to Harpers Ferry in 1996.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting mushrooms, working in his yard and spending time on the Mississippi River. Kenneth's favorite times were spent with his family and friends especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Carter of Harpers Ferry, IA; 3 daughters, Nancy Carter of Des Moines, IA, Diana (Dennis) Clubine of Hudson, IA and Karen (Erin)Yauslin of West Union, IA; 6 grandchildren; and a brother, Rex Carter of Cedar Rapids, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Gary Carter.

Honorary casketbearers are Larry Johnson, Gene Klinge, Ron Davis, Denny Luck, Gene Glover and Larry Judd.
