Keith McKinley Hastings was born on December 23, 1923 on a farm west of Waukon, IA, the son of Chester Everett and Elsie (Kuester) Hastings. His family moved a lot when he was a child and Keith attended a number of different area country schools as well as Waterville High School. On July 18, 1954 he married Jean Gertrude Schmidt at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Keith worked at a gas station in Waukon for a couple of years before beginning a long career as a sales clerk for men's clothing stores. He began at the B&B Clothing Store in Waukon, spent a few years at Jacobi's Clothing in Waukon, and then returned to the B&B. He took great pride in his work and also his appearance and was well known for his habit of wearing a nice suit every day, no matter what he was doing.
From a young age, Keith had an interest in electronics and radio. Although he didn't realize his dream of starting a radio station, he did spend many years as an avid CB and Ham radio operator. He also worked with Fred Fish setting up the sound system for numerous area events. Keith served as treasurer of St. Paul's United Methodist Church when he was a member there, and also for Oakland Cemetery. Since 1969 he has been a faithful member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Keith enjoyed music and starting in the late 1930s and continuing into the 1950s, he played guitar and banjo with his father Chester at many local house dances which were common at the time. Traveling with his family, mowing the yard, taking leisurely Sunday drives, and attending community events with Jean were some of Keith's other favorite pastimes.
Survivors include his two sons, Kevin of Waukon and Kendall (Jennifer) of Mendham, NJ; 2 grandchildren, Colin and Arianna; 2 sisters, Lila Ewing of Corvalis, OR and Sylvia Huffman of Waterloo, IA; and a sister-in-law, Barb Hastings of Columbia, MO. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jean, who died in 2008; a brother, Ronald; and 2 brothers-in-law, Neal Ewing and Cyril Huffman.
