Kay Mooney, 83, of Harpers Ferry, IA, died Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 16th, at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church in rural Lansing, IA, with Fr. John Moser officiating and burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 2:30 PM scripture service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church Foundation or to the Veterans Memorial Hospital Healthcare Foundation.
Janet Kay Mooney was born September 4, 1936, in Clinton, IA, the daughter of William Buell and Helen Irene (Christiansen) Gode. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Episcopal Church in Clinton. Kay graduated from Clinton High School in 1955, and then attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, IA, receiving a two-year elementary education degree. She then moved to Waukon where she taught Kindergarten for two years.
On June 8, 1959, she married Maurice Harold Mooney at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clinton. After they were married they lived on the Mooney family farm on Sweet Ridge Drive. Over the next ten years while teaching in Lansing, IA, Kay attended many continuing education classes until graduating from Upper Iowa University with her BA degree in elementary education. Kay taught Kindergarten, 2nd grade and 4th grade for Eastern Allamakee Community Schools in Lansing, for a total of 36 years.
Kay was a member of Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church in rural Lansing, where she was active in Rosary Society. She was also very active with the Lansing Lions Club, as well as the MOSAIC Community Relations Committee and Eastern Allamakee Community School Dollars for Scholars, volunteered as a greeter for Veterans Memorial Hospital, and was an official election poll worker. Kay especially enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River and traveling the United States with Maury, making it to all but three states. She was an avid reader, enjoyed planting flowers, swimming, and playing dominoes . Kay loved taking care of her grandchildren and attending their activities, spending time with her family and friends, and loved meeting people and making new friends.
Survivors include her husband Maury of Harpers Ferry, IA; her children: Erin (Brad) Berns of Waukon, and Gregory (Erin) Mooney of West Salem, WI; seven grandchildren: Brock, Brigid, Brenna, Carson, Kyla, Jake, and Reese; a brother William "Bill" Buell Gode of Corydon, IA; and a brother-in-law Frank Norton of Atlanta, GA. She is preceded in death by her parents; a son Mark Mooney, who died 40 years ago this month; two brothers and sisters-in-law Dale "Chip" and Mona Chapman and Thomas and Carole Mooney; as well as two other sisters-in-law: Jeanne Norton and Connie Gode.
