Julia A. Roe-Bernhardt, 87, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 2nd, at 11:00 AM at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be in the Old West Paint Creek Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 - 7:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Julia Amelia Roe-Bernhardt was born February 27, 1921 in Clermont, IA, the daughter of Alfred and Amelia (Pederson) Olson. She was baptized on April 24, 1921 and confirmed on May 12, 1935, both at the West Clermont Lutheran Church. Julia graduated from Clermont High School on May 16, 1938. After high school she first worked for Dr. Jerde in Clermont, then for quite a few years at a Waukon grocery store. For over 30 years Julia was a bookkeeper at the Waukon Equity Co-op. On April 13, 1942 she married Orrin J. Roe at Kahoka, MO; he died on October 20, 1977. On December 16, 1983 she married Edward Bernhardt at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon; he died on July 24, 1992.
Julia was a long time member of Toastmistresses and Old West Paint Creek Church and its WELCA Ladies Aide. She enjoyed time spent with her grand and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her 3 sons, Ron (Roberta) Roe of Carroll, IA, and Marv Roe, and Curt (Cheryl) Roe both of Waukon; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; two sons, Allen and Russell Roe; 4 sisters, Agnes Ellis, Bessie Hirsch, Irene Thompson and Gladys Kobriger; and 3 brothers, Olaf, Joseph and Leonard Olson.
