Joyce E. Shogren, 75, of Waterville, IA, died on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 15th, at 11:00 am at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, with Pastor Laura Gentry officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing, IA. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 pm on Friday at Martin Funeral Home.
Joyce Evelyn Shogren was born on December 3, 1937, to Dwight and Bessie (Darnell) Van Brocklin on their farm in rural Lansing, IA. She attended Lansing area country schools, and graduated from Lansing High School in 1955. On March 20, 1956, she married Gene Shogren in Garrison, IA; they lived in Village Creek Township before settling down on their farm near Waterville, IA, where they have lived ever since. Joyce had held multiple jobs throughout her life including working at the Lansing button factory, Peters Insurance Agency, and working on her and Gene's farm. She was currently employed at Kerndt Brothers Insurance Agency in Lansing.
She enjoyed working on the farm; fieldwork with the tractors, raising the calves, and bookkeeping were her favorites. Joyce liked to play cards, such as bridge and 500, and also liked bowling and flower gardening. She had a love of all animals, especially Oscar her dog and other pets. Spending time with her grandchildren was also a big love of hers.
Joyce is survived by her husband Gene of Waterville; two sons: Terry (Dawn) of Waukon, IA, and Dave (Carol) of Pardeeville, WI; four grandchildren: Katie, Luke, Alicia, and Christian; sister Florence McKee of Lansing; two brothers: Irvin " Bud" Van Brocklin of Arizona, and Robert (Kathryn) Van Brocklin of New Albin, IA; two sisters-in-law: Lorraine Shogren of Waukon, and Dolores Schellhammer of Lansing; and brother-in-law LaVerne (Judy) Shogren of Marquette, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Clarence (Edna) Van Brocklin and Ray (Selma) Van Brocklin; two sisters: Ada (Walter) Boltz and Phyllis (Don) Hammel; sister-in-law Dorothy Van Brocklin; and three brothers-in-law: Art McKee, Harlan Schellhammer, and Kenneth Shogren.
Honorary casketbearers are Sandi Riha, Denise Becker, Dawn Schlitter, and Lorna Hosley. Casketbearers are Jeff Sweeney, Cletus Sommer, Derrick and Andy Shogren, Dave Darling, and Lyle Peters.
