John Leroy Waldron

January 26, 1923 — July 15, 2006

John L. Waldron, 83, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 19th at 10:30 am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4 pm Scripture Service and an 8 pm Knights of Columbus Rosary.

John Leroy Waldron was born on January 26, 1923 in Waukon, IA, the son of James L. and Amanda (Bodendorfer) Waldron. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he remained a life-long member. John attended St. Patrick's Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1940. He enlisted in the US Army where he served from February 1941 until August 1943. He saw duty in French Morroco, Africa, with the 3rd Infantry, the most decorated American unit during WW II. Following the service he spent a short time in Chicago before returning to Waukon. On May 21, 1946 he married Ruth Huber at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah, IA. John spent his working career as a baker with Waldron's Bakery in Waukon for 35 years and also worked at the Waukon Golf and Country Club for 25 years.

John was a member of St. Matthew's Council of Knights of Columbus and a life-member of Lawrence D. Anderson Post of VFW. He enjoyed hunting and loved fishing at the Mississippi River. He also liked spending time in his garden, going to dances throughout the area, taking long rides through the local countryside and spending as much time as possible with his family.

Survivors include his wife Ruth of Waukon; 2 sons, John J. (Annette) Waldron of Marion, IA and Mark Waldron of Lakeland, FL; 2 daughters, Anne Marie (Peter) Fuchsteiner of St. Cloud, MN and Mary Diane (Jim) Mercil of Cedar Rapids, IA; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Maxine (Milo) Howell of Ft. Worth, TX, Jeanne (Dick) Roggensack of Mount Dora, FL and Marie (Roger) Sullivan of New Lenox, IL; 2 sisters-in-law, Lois Waldron of Keokuk, IA and Cheryl Waldron of Waukon; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers, Vernon and wife Beck, Bill and wife Marge, Stan and Paul "Butch" Waldron.
