Joan L. Lyons, 58, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, February 5, 2018, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, as the result of an automobile accident in Kentucky with her sisters Mary Engrav and Barb Winters-Kelly. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 13th, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, IA, with Fr. Mark Osterhaus and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Lycurgus Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, where there will be a 3:30 PM scripture service. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic School in Waukon.
Joan Louise Lyons was born January 15, 1960, in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Donald and Janette (Monroe) Ryder. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Joan attended St. Patrick Catholic School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1978; she also graduated from NICC in Calmar, IA, in 2001. On June 24, 1978, she married Daniel Lyons at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Joan and Danny farmed west of Waukon; she also did daycare out of her home for family and neighbors. In addition, Joan worked at Klenske Drug Store numerous years and for Pro Build/Builders First Source for the past 17 years, both in Waukon.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she was active in ACCW, CEW, MOMS, and was a confirmation leader for many years. Joan was also a 4-H leader. She enjoyed spending time and vacationing with friends and family, especially her grandchildren. Joan liked taking rides in the convertible and boat, crocheting, dancing (especially with her sisters), and playing cards. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and was looking forward to taking a trip to Ireland with Danny in the future. They were also looking forward to celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this June.
Survivors include her husband Danny of Waukon; her four children: Tara (Andy) Stein of Lansing, IA, Shelly (Dan) Valley of Harpers Ferry, IA, Justin (Tina) Lyons and Alana (Tom) Gavin, both of Lansing; her mother Janette Ryder Blong of Waukon; 12 grandchildren: Ashlyn, Kaili, and Cael Stein, Ty, Ella, and Eli Valley, Matthew and Katie Lyons, and Brielle, Brogan, Breyson, and Braxon Gavin; her siblings: Barbara (Wayne) Winters-Kelly, Patty (Steve) Scholtes, Cathy (Keith) Dahlstrom, Charlene (Jim) Baxter, Bill Ryder, Peggy (Curt) Reiser, Tom Ryder, and Donna (Rich) Kelly; brother-in-law Steve Engrav; an aunt Sister Mary Bosco Ryder; and her mother-in-law Theresa Lyons. She is preceded in death by her father Donald; stepfather Gerald Blong; a sister Mary Engrav; an aunt Betty Ryder; her father-in-law Ralph Lyons; a brother-in-law Dennis Winters; and a niece Katelyn Lyons.
Honorary casketbearers are her god children Jeremy Engrav and Krista Rasque and good friends Tim and Mary Kelly, Loran and Dianne Schulte, and the CEW Community. Casketbearers are Justin Lyons, Andy Stein, Dan Valley, Tom Gavin, and Bill and Tom Ryder.
