She grew up on a farm near Crystal and graduated in 1927 from Crystal High School as valedictorian of her class. On June 12, 1929 she married Edwin E. Johnson at her home in Crystal. They moved to Waukon in 1946 where Jessie was a member of New Century Club, First Baptist Church, and later, St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Center and the annual Allamakee County Fair, where she supervised the floral entries. Jessie was an avid reader, played the piano, and loved music. Raising flowers, baking, crocheting afghans, and doing other fancywork were some of her other favorite pastimes. Her faith was an important part of her life and she nurtured her personal relationship with God through daily devotions and prayer. Since 1996 she has been a resident of Good Samaritan Center where she enjoyed taking part in all the activities and became very close friends with the staff and other residents.
