Janet Palmer, 66, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, March 28, 2021, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 1st, at 11:00 AM at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating and burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Wednesday at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon. In consideration of concerns regarding Covid-19, social distancing and wearing of masks is encouraged. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Veterans Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary, Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, or to Robey Memorial Library, all in Waukon.
Janet Palmer was born November 8, 1954, in El Paso, TX, the daughter of Robert and Mary Ann (Wehr) Miller. She graduated high school in North English, IA in 1972, graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA in 1976, and then from Luther College in Decorah, IA, where she received her teaching degree. On April 24, 1976, she married Bruce Palmer at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Janet had worked at the Martin Lutheran Home and also at the Good Samaritan Center as a social worker, both in Waukon; and at Kee High in Lansing, IA, as a high school resource room teacher.
Janet was a member at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church and was active in ladies circles. She was a member of Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she would help stock the gift case, the American Legion Auxiliary, and for many years was involved in numerous county fairs as a 4-H judge. She was an extremely talented seamstress, sewing baptismal gowns, first communion gowns and doll clothing, and she enjoyed quilting and crocheting afghans. Janet enjoyed going to auctions and garage sales, and spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband Bruce of Waukon; her children: Lee (Jennifer) Palmer of Spencer, IA, and Laura (Eric) Scow of Bennington, NE; six grandchildren: Noah, Alexandria, Lucas, and Samuel Palmer, and Violet and Vivian Scow; her father Robert Miller and his wife Kay of North English, IA; two brothers: Ralph (Anna) Miller and Dan (Barbara) Miller; her brothers and sisters-in-law: Roberta (Steve) Cunningham, Greg (Marlene) Palmer, Mark (Deb) Palmer, Becky (Al) Bailey, Barbara Palmer, Kathy (Todd) Cahoon, Chuck (Rena) Palmer, Mary (Bob) Davis, and Mary Lou Miller; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her son Lewis, who died in 2006, and her mother Mary Ann Edwards.
Honorary casketbearers are Janet's grandchildren; her Wartburg College roommates: Becky Bailey, Ruth Makela, Connie Michel, Rhonda Sondgeroth, Maggie Tannahill, and Nola Waddingham; and Janet's sisters-in-law and good friends Deb Palmer and Marlene Palmer. Casketbearers are Noah Palmer, Alexandria Palmer, Eric Scow, Aaron Palmer, Stephen Miller, Katherine Miller, Greg Avis, and Eric Rich.
