Janet I. Martin, 78, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, December 21, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 24th, at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be held in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4:00 pm scripture service.
Janet Iona Martin was born March 9, 1931 in Garnavillo, IA, the daughter of Herbert and Elnora (Jahnke) Schmidt. She attended rural country school in Allamakee County, graduated from Waterville High School in 1948 and attended Luther College in Decorah and graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA. On June 21, 1949 she married Francis Martin at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Janet was a teacher for the Allamakee Community School District for 29 years, retiring in 1993. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Janet enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, reading, gardening, crocheting and needle work.
Survivors include her husband, Francis Martin of Waukon; her children, Jean Ann O'Connell of Chicago, IL; Dave Martin of Waterloo, IA; Deb (Joe) Geno of Rochester, MN; Jeff (Lori) Martin of Waukon and Greg (Jan) Martin of New Providence, NJ; 7 grandchildren, Adam, Alison, Courtney and Brendan Martin, Caitlin O'Connell, Marty (Wendi) Geno, Nikki (Chris) Kalkbrenner; 3 great-grandchildren, Conor Kalkbrenner, Emma and Addy Geno; a sister, Jean Monserud of Waukon and a brother, Herbert "Bud" (Kathy) Schmidt, Jr. of Waterville. She is preceded in death by her parents and a son-in-law, Robert O'Connell.
Casketbearers are her grandchildren and their spouses.
