James Leroy Leas

James L. Leas, 59, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 14th, at 11:00 AM at Rossville Presbyterian Church in Rossville, IA, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

James LeRoy Leas was born on September 4, 1949 in Waukon, IA, the son of Harlan Neil and Darlene (Rush) Leas. He was baptized and confirmed at Rossville Presbyterian Church in Rossville. James attended Jefferson #7 country school in rural Waukon, graduated from Waukon High School in 1968 and attended NEICC in Calmer for one year where he received a certificate as an auto mechanic. He served in the US Army from 1969 to 1971 where he was stationed in Germany. After the service he farmed with his father in Jefferson Township and worked at Leas Service Garage in Rossville. James also owned Leas Excavating where he hauled rock and ran a backhoe.

He was a member of Rossville Presbyterian Church and was a member of the American Legion in Waukon. James enjoyed working on farm machinery, plowing snow for neighbors and residents in Rossville, tilling gardens, reading and spending time with family and friends.


Survivors include his mother, Darlene and a brother, David both of Waukon, IA. He is preceded in death by his father, Neil.

Honorary casketbearers are Garry and Jan Barrett, Dennis and Sandy Deal, Hartley and Vickie Enyart and Scott Enyart. Casketbearers are Jake Sweeney, Brad Freilinger, Brad Decker, Kermit Klees, Larry Ashbacher, Virgil Thorstenson.
