Howard James Snitker was born on December 2, 1927 on the family farm in Union Prairie Township of Allamakee County, IA. His parents were Alfred A. Snitker, son of William and Lena (Grotegut) Snitker and Esther Olga Sanderman, daughter of Otto and Mary (Meier) Sanderman. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ and attended both Ludlow #3 and the Bell rural schools. After his schooling Howard worked for a short time for DeBuhr Plumbing in Waukon, IA and at Rath Packing Plant in Waterloo, IA for a couple of seasons. He then returned to start farming with his parents. On February 15, 1950 he married Viola Selma Moen at the Glenwood Lutheran Church Parsonage in rural Decorah, IA. Howard and Viola farmed together in Ludlow Township, starting in their early years using horses. They had a traditional farm for their time, operating a dairy herd and raising beef cattle, hogs, chickens, and grain. Howard loved the farming life and was very handy with repairs around the farm. He was also an accomplished carpenter and built many of his own outbuildings. After retiring from his own operation, he continued to do farm work for Adam Quandahl.

Howard was a lifelong member of Salem United Church of Christ where he served on the Consistory. He was also a member of Farm Bureau. In addition to taking care of his fields, he loved to plant trees. Howard got a lot of enjoyment out of playing euchre and other games with his family, listening to music, traveling to see family, and visiting with his friends and neighbors. He was very comfortable and content with his life, choosing to always look on the positive side of things.

Howard is survived by his 3 children, Allan "Greg" (Lisa) of Postville, IA, Glenda (Lawrence) Green of Hampton, IA, and Gaylen of Waukon; 4 grandchildren, Karsten and Korey (fiancé McKayla O'Hare) Snitker and Trevor and Kierra Green; 2 sisters, Joyce (Arden) Hanson and Phyllis (Ozzie) Quandahl, both of Waukon; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Viola, who died in 1991.

Honorary casketbearers are Ozzie Quandahl, Arden Hanson, Curtis Lippe, Harriet Qualey, and Tess Pladsen. Casketbearers are Korey Snitker, James Harris, Neil Krumme, Tom McCabe, Adam Quandahl, Tom Regan, and Larry Snitker.
