Helen L. Meierkord, 91, of Waukon, IA, died Thursday, September 27, 2007 at Green Hill Nursing Home in Ames, IA. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 1st at 11:00 am at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard Eick officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Helen Lenore Meierkord was born on February 10, 1916 in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Louis Theodore and Haldis (Kolsrud) Hermanson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church and graduated from Waukon High School in the normal training curriculum. Following school she moved to Illinois where she worked as a governess for a family in Chicago. On August 19, 1942 she married Dr. John Frederick Meierkord. They lived their married life in Waukon where Helen was a busy homemaker and mother and also worked as an office assistant in John's dental practice.
Helen was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon since marriage where she was active as a youth group sponsor and Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of PEO, VOV Study Club, Birthday Club, and Eastern Star. She enjoyed flower gardening, knitting and cooking. Her family and friends remained the center of her life and she loved spending time and entertaining at the family cabin on the Mississippi River, taking fishing trips to Canada and wintering in Albuquerque, NM with her daughter Ann. She will be remembered always as a devoted wife, wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a caring friend.
Survivors include: her daughter, Ann Meierkord of Albuquerque, NM; her son, Fred (Judy) Meierkord of Ames, IA; 3 grandchildren; Tara, Kelly and Erin Meierkord; and a great-grandson, Aaron Link. She is preceded in death by: her parents; her husband Dr. John, who died in 2005; a son, John; 2 sisters, Ruth Dravis and Thelma Baltzer; and a brother, Theodore Hermanson.
