Gordon Bakkom Gilbertson was born October 21, 1923, in Waterville, IA, the son of Carl and Hilda (Bakkom) Gilbertson. He was baptized and confirmed at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, IA, and graduated from Waterville High School. On June 22, 1948, Gordon married Donna Mae Campbell at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA, and the couple lived and farmed on the same farm where Gordon had grown up. They were primarily a dairy farm and in 1990, he and Donna retired and moved to Waukon. Gordon then kept busy painting houses and barns.
He was a member of West Paint Creek Synod Church and King of Grace Lutheran Church in Waukon. Gordon held many church offices through the years, was a board member of the Waterville Creamery and the Waterville Rural Fire Protection Board, was a Paint Creek Township trustee, and was a member of Farm Bureau. Some activities he enjoyed included: bowling, golfing, playing horseshoes and cards, and fishing; he was a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. Gordon also liked woodworking and made things like birdhouses, calendar holders, and signs. Having quite the sweet tooth, he always looked forward to people bringing him treats, especially of the Norwegian variety. Mostly, Gordon loved spending time with his family and friends.
Gordon is survived by his wife Donna of Waukon; his four children: Gary (Jean) Gilbertson of Waterville, Greg (Sue) Gilbertson of Waukon, Becky (Don) Quijano of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Kim (Jerome) Amos of Stewartville, MN; grandchildren: Amy (Mark Jackson) Gilbertson, Jessie (Adam) Krause, Nick Gilbertson, Luke (Karin Gray) Aswegan, Russ Roe, and Dee (John) Heying; great-grandchildren: Katelyn, Alison, and Thomas Heying and Nora and Mia Krause; brother-in-law Roger Campbell of Stromsburg, NE; and sister-in-law Bonnie Campbell of Cedar Rapids, IA.
