Gertrude Loretta Lawson Moose Hamm was born on May 21, 1922 in rural Postville, IA, the daughter of Leonard Leo and Alice Bell (Tindell) Lawson. She attended Evergreen and Ludlow #7 rural schools and then Waukon High School. On March 26, 1941 she married Hollis Moose in Waukon. After their marriage they moved to Madison, WI, where Hollis worked to support the war effort. They later moved back to the Waukon area where Gertrude and Hollis rented numerous farms before buying their dream farm on Silver Creek in 1953. They farmed this farm for 21 years before having a farm sale in 1974 and moving into Waukon. Hollis passed away in 1982. On January 21, 1989 Gertrude married Harmon Hamm at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon. Harmon passed away in 1992. With the onset of declining health, Gertrude sold her house and has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon since July of 2008.

Gertrude's passions in life were many. She was a full time partner on the farm, working many hours beside her husband Hollis, in addition to caring for her three children. In her spare time she remodeled the farm house they lived in. After moving into Waukon, Gertrude had time to pursue other interests which included gardening, ceramics and remodeling their new home. Gertrude's true love was her family. She was always available to baby sit her grandchildren and made sure she had time to listen and play cards with them. Feeding her many visitors was a big part of her life, with the coffee pot always on and many delicious deserts present. One of her favorite pastimes was following the Toe Tappers and she spent many hours on the dance floor to their music. She shared a fondness for games with Harmon, especially playing cards, and her love of fishing was evident as she always kept her fish pole and tackle box in the trunk of her car.

Survivors include 3 children, Garry (Delores) Moose of Marion, IA, and Lyle (Diane) Moose and Julie (Carl) Johnson, both of Waukon; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Beulah Enyart of Waukon; a stepson, Keith (Pat) Hamm of Dubuque, IA; a step daughter-in-law, Betty Hamm of Ottumwa, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Hollis Moose and Harmon Hamm; 2 brothers, Donald and Roland Lawson; and a stepson, Kenneth Hamm.
