Gerald R. Kernan, 84, of Lansing, IA, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 30th, at 11:00 AM at Wexford Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, rural Lansing. Burial with Military Rites will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and after 10:30 AM Tuesday at the church. A Scripture service will be at 4 PM Monday at the Funeral Home.
Gerald Raphael Kernan was born on July 24, 1926 in LaFayette Township, Allamakee County IA, the son of Joseph and Ellen (Cota) Kernan. He was baptized and confirmed at Wexford Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of which he was a life long member. He attended the LaFayette School #7 followed by serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. Over the years Gerald farmed, operated a TV and Radio Repair Shop in Lansing and painted houses and farm buildings. Gerald enjoyed photography, metal detecting, baking and canning produce from his own garden.
Survivors include one brother, Francis (Leonette) Kernan of Lansing; three sisters, Marguerite Schulte of Waukon, Alice Conway of Harpers Ferry, IA and Genevieve Mohn of La Crosse, WI. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marcella McGuire and Sr. Cyrilla Kernan PBVM; and one brother, Leo Kernan.
