George Herman

George N. Herman, 85, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, September 2, 2016, at his home. Private funeral services were held Thursday, September 8th, at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

George Nelson Herman was born April 14, 1931, in Waukon, IA, the son of Charles August and Marie Althea (Nelson) Herman. He was baptized on June 26, 1931, and confirmed April 14, 1946, both at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, and graduated from Waukon High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1954-56. On October 2, 1958, George married Mildred Lavonne Bruns at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA. George farmed all his life and also owned a small motor repair business, which he operated in Waukon before moving it out to his family farm. He was a private man who valued his family and found fulfillment pursuing his interests and living his life on the farm.

George is survived by four children: Beverly (Daryl) Davis of Lake Crystal, MN, Barbara (David) Riley of Creston, IA, Phyllis (Robert) Bittinger of Portland, OR, and Daniel (Shelley Tunwall) Herman of Eau Claire, WI; eight grandchildren: Evan and Bryan Davis, Jacob (Danielle) Riley, Jessica (Joel) Gieswein, Daniel Riley, and Savannah, Sierra, and Selena Herman; son-in-law Dan Sass of Waukon; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mildred in 2007; infant son Jeffrey; daughter Karen Sass; his brother Karl Herman; and his sister Lorna (Ernie) Fruechte.

Honorary casketbearer was Donald Fruechte. Casketbearers were Daniel Herman, Daryl and Evan Davis, David, Jacob, and Daniel Riley, and Robert Bittinger.
