George Steven Decker was born on March 29, 1939 on the rural Waukon, IA farm of his parents, Ernest Edward and Cora Ella (Smith) Decker. Following his education at Jefferson #7 rural school, he worked a short time at the Hygrade Turkey Plant in Postville, IA, and for several area farmers, including Glenn Beardmore and Maloy Johanningmeier. On October 15, 1960 he married Betty Jane Brinker at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen, MN. George and Betty bought a farm in Jefferson Township in 1962 and through the years have operated a dairy herd and raised beef cattle, hogs and grain.
George had a life-long love of the outdoors which made him well suited to the farming life. He spent many of his favorite times hunting, fishing, looking for mushrooms and riding four wheelers.
