Gaylord "Lee" Spores

Gaylord "Lee" Spores, 78, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday, October 19, 2019, at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 25th at 11:00 am at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, with Pastor Kim Gates officiating. Burial will be at Freeport Cemetery in Freeport, IA. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Gaylord Lee Spores was born February 17, 1941, in Dorchester, IA, the son of James Jr., and Luain (Burroughs) Spores. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Methodist Church in Dorchester. Gaylord attended rural country schools in the Dorchester area and graduated from Waukon High School in 1959. Following high school he worked for several years as a carpenter for a lumber yard in Spring Grove, MN. Gaylord had a long career at DECO Products in Decorah, IA, where he was a supervisor on an assembly line making zinc die cast products. In 1980 he married Doreen Rovang; they were later divorced.

In his younger years Gaylord enjoyed playing softball and baseball. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman his entire life. He was known for keeping all of his vehicles in immaculate condition. Reading, collecting guns, and going to flea markets were some of his favorite pastimes. Gaylord enjoyed the company of his neighbors and good friends as well as the hunting dogs he raised over the years.
Survivors include his siblings: Charlotte Lunde and Darrell Spores both of Waterloo, IA, and Shelby (Clifford) Babinski of Rock Island, IL; a sister-in-law Kathy Spores of Forest City, IA; and seven nieces and nephews and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Sheldon Spores; and a brother-in-law William Lunde.

Casketbearers are Ron Beardmore, Mike Lunde, Curtis Spores, Dennis Mahr, Jim Mensen, and Bob Kelly.
