Garry L. Barrett, 81, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Graveside services with military honors will be held Tuesday, July 25th, at 11:00 AM at Oakland Cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Monday at Martin - Grau Funeral Home in Waukon.
Garry Lee Barrett was born August 3, 1941, in Postville, IA, the son of Lloyd and Mae (Wintrick) Barrett. He attended French Creek country school in rural Waukon. Garry served in the United States Army from 1967 – 1973. He was active duty during the Vietnam War as a helicopter mechanic until 1969, then served in the reserves until 1973, when he was honorably discharged as an E5. On October 10, 1970, he married Janice Kempf in Cedar Rapids, IA. They then established a home together in rural Waukon to raise their family. Garry owned and operated Garry L. Barrett Trucking from 1996 to 2011. He retired in 2011, but continued driving at leisure for local farmers. He enjoyed traveling with Janice to visit family across the United States, watching NASCAR, and reading about antique cars and tractors.
Survivors include his wife, Janice of Waukon; his children: James Barrett of Chicago, IL, Jeffrey Barrett of Prairie du Chien, WI, Jason (Carrie) Barrett of Seattle, WA, Cindy (Max) Barrett Schulte of Baltimore, MD, Lucy (Trevor) Harwood of Waukon, and Chris (fiancée Aly Meyer) Barrett of Des Moines, IA; 11 grandchildren: Racheal, Tony, Bowen, Caitilin, Ayden, Gabe, Mikariyah, Simon, Milo, Roehrey, and Avalynn; and four great-grandchildren: Sophie, Addison, Dante, and Avery. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Donna Mae Barrett, in 1972.
Honorary casketbearers are Ayden, Simon, and Milo Barrett, and Roehrey Schulte. Casketbearers are James, Jeffrey, Jason, Chris, and Bowen Barrett, Max Schulte, Trevor Harwood, and Gabe Waters.
