Frances C. Smith, 100, of Manchester, IA, formerly of Masonville, IA and rural Postville, IA, died Sunday, April 1, 2007 at Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 4th at 11:00 am at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, IA, with Rev. Richard Iles officiating. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery, Rossville, IA. Friends may call from 10:00 am until time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Frances Catherine Smith was born on November 11, 1906 in Marion, IN, the daughter of Ralph and Sarah (Kimpston) Koons. She attended rural Clayton County schools and Elkader High School. After school she worked as a housekeeper for several area families and spent some time with her sister in Oklahoma where she worked for a company that made glass canning jars. On February 15, 1929 she married Leonard Bruce Smith near Postville. After that she was a busy homemaker, raising nine children. Frances liked to garden and sew and was an avid reader. She loved children, especially babies, and was known to her friends and family as a wonderful mother as well as a very caring and patient woman.
Survivors include her children, Irene Suckow of Postville, Evelyn (Roy) Highley of Cedar Rapids, IA, Doris (Roger) Potts of Robins, IA, Jackie (John) Berndsen of Hot Springs, AR, Opal (Richard) Goeke of Masonville, IA, Sidney (Lila) Smith of Seffner, FL, and Ivana and John Smith, both of Waukon; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law, Mary Koons of Cedar Rapids, Vivian Wintrick of Rochester, MN, and Esther Smith of Postville; and a half sister-in-law, Cora Koons of Elkader. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leonard, who died in 1987; a daughter Susan; 2 sisters, Florence Caudle and an infant, Mary; 5 brothers, Vernon, Howard, DeVillo "Sandy" and Jack Koons and Freelan Koontz; a half-sister, Doris Koons; and a half-brother, Julian Koons.
Casketbearers are Roy and Charles Highley, Bert and Stewart Smith, Ronald Goeke and Darrell Potts.
