Fern M. Roffman, 93, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, October 15, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 19th, at 11:00 AM at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Fern Madell Roffman was born on June 22, 1918 at her parents home in rural Waukon, IA, the daughter of Willard and Melvia (Gress) Vickery. She was baptized and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, IA, and attended local schools. On July 28, 1934 she married Glenn "Pops" Roffman in Decorah. They farmed together in rural Allamakee County from 1934 until 1973. Fern also worked at Wapsi Produce in Decorah. In 1973 they sold the farm and moved into Waukon. She retired from Wapsi Produce in 1982. Fern and Glenn purchased Stepps Melon Stand in 1988 and renamed the stand to "Pop's Produce" where they sold fruits, vegetables, flowers, Christmas trees, pumpkins, melons and other items many of which they raised. She was still very active at "Pop's" until the time of her death.
Fern loved spending time in the outdoors working in her gardens, fishing and mushroom hunting. She also enjoyed sewing, playing solitaire, crocheting and working crossword puzzles. Fern's favorite times were when she was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Donald Roffman of Welton, IA, Linda (Steve) Henning of Decorah, IA Sandy (John) Byrnes of Waukon, IA; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Curtis Steele of Waukon; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Roffman of Moline, IL; 2 sisters-in-law, Eula Thies of Waukon and Lorene Vickery of Andalusia, AL. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn "Pops" who died in 1993; a daughter, Shirley Steele; a son, Lyle Roffman; a grandson, Randy Roffman; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Roffman; 3 brothers, Robert, Charles and Elwood Vickery; and a sister, Gladys Johnson.
Casketbearers are David, Richard and Brandon Bollman, Ron Roffman, Sean Byrnes and Colin Steiber.
