Evalena M. Sommer, 91, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Good Samaritan Home in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 14th, at 10:30 AM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon, with Pastor Eddie Cabrera officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Evalena May Sommer was born May 3, 1917 in rural Waukon, IA, the daughter of Joseph and Eva (Aldrich) Johnson. She attended country schools in the Village Creek area. On September 29, 1936 she married Charles A. Sommer in Waukon. Evalena stayed home to raise her five children and was a caregiver for her mother-in-law for several years. Evalena was an active member of the Waukon Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed cooking, canning, writing poems, reading the bible, and taking care of her vegetable and flower garden. Evalena's favorite times were spent with her family. She especially liked telling stories to her grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Charles Jr. (Kay) of Kansas City, KS, Gerald (Judy) of Waukon, Cletus (Sandi) of Waukon, Jean Ann Sommer of Denver, CO and Linda (Earl) Schulte of Waukon; 21 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine (Kenneth) Shogren of Waukon; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Johnson of Phoenix, AZ. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles, who died in 1989; a grandson, Charles Sommer III; 2 sisters, Alice and Aleta Johnson; a brother, Aldrich Johnson; and several infant great-grandchildren, her "Little Angels."
Honorary casketbearers are her granddaughters, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Casketbearers are Joel, Jeff, James, Jason, David, Cameron and Troy Sommer, Daryn Bauermeister and Kent Schulte.
