Ethel Ehde Stone, 74, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 19th at 11:00 am at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Ethel Arlene Ehde Stone was born on September 23, 1932 in Lansing, IA, the daughter of Otto and Beaulah (Knickerbocker) Heuer. She grew up in the Lansing area and attended the Lansing School. Following school she helped on the family farm and worked as a waitress at a cafe in Waukon. On June 4, 1948 she married Verni C. Ehde at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They farmed together in rural Waukon. Following Verni's death in 1988, she married Tom Stone on September 16, 1989 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Ethel did some housekeeping work for area families, helped Tom clean at the Waukon City Hall, did some button work in her home for the Blumenthal Lansing Company, and continued to sell and deliver eggs throughout the local area.
Ethel was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon and active in its ladies circles. She was an avid gardener and particularly fond of raising her flowers. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors, doing a little embroidery and staying in touch with her family and friends. Her grand and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Survivors include her husband Tom Stone of Waukon; a daughter, Carol (Joe) Stammeyer of Waukon; 8 step-children, Mary Stone, Darrell (Jean) Stone and Wayne (Nona) Stone, all of Waukon, Katie Stone of Black River Falls, WI, Rita (Steve) Keonkle of West Union, Linda Stone of Sumner, Lori Stone of New Hampton and Tim (Wendy) Stone of New Albin; 3 grandchildren, Joey (Jennie) Stammeyer of Onalaska, WI, and Lacey (Daric) Steiber and Ross (Alisha Kregel) Stammeyer, both of Waukon; 2 great-grandchildren, Makenzie Stammeyer and Colton Steiber; 28 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Dorothy (Stanley) Lorentzen of Pensacola, FL, Alma (Edward) Sobiech of St. Cloud, MN, Patricia Fostvedt of Spring Hill, FL, and Carol (Jerome) Fink of La Crosse, WI; and a brother, Carl (Gail) Heuer of Rock Island, IL. She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Verni; a brother Cyril Heuer; and an infant sister.
Honorary casketbearers are Makenzie Stammeyer and Colton Steiber. Casketbearers are Joey and Ross Stammeyer, Lacey Steiber, Randy Ehde, John Grangaard, and George and Edward Bieber.
